Everyone’s always
complaining about how dirty the environment is and how the temperature is
rising. But why aren’t we doing anything about it? It’s as if people expect
that the problems will go away themselves if they are ignored. Well that’s not
the case. Everyone has to contribute. The condition of the environment is
getting worse day by day and if you don’t do anything about it, the future
generations will suffer. It’s still not too late to do something about it.
CHAPTER 1: What’s Happening To Our World
A lot of new
problems are arising in the world and it’s all our fault, so we have to fix it.
The first step to do so is to understand what’s happening. The current major
problems of our world are, Global Warming, Deforestation and Pollution.
Global Warming: Global warming is the issue caused by the
emission of greenhouse gases. A greenhouse gas is a gas, which contributes to
the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation, for example carbon
dioxide. These gases trap the heat which would otherwise escape from the
Earth’s atmosphere and hereby increasing the Earth’s average surface
temperature. Global warming also leads to the rising temperature of the ocean.
Deforestation: Deforestation is another environmental
problem we’ve caused. It is simply the clearing of trees and forests for
residential, industrial or commercial purposes. It is predicted that most of
the humid tropical forests as we know it will be transformed into unproductive
land in the next 25-30 years. Deforestation comes in different forms like
fires, clear-cutting for agriculture, ranching and development. But the main
cause is unsustainable logging for timber.
Pollution: The pollution of the air, water and soil
is a major problem caused by industries and vehicle exhausts. Air pollution,
the most harmful pollution of all can be caused by toxins and gases from
factories. Water pollution is usually caused by oil spills and acid rain. Soil
pollution on the other hand is caused by industrial waste which deprives the
soil of essential nutrients.
Environmental
problems, especially these major ones can’t be ignored. Not only do they harm
the ecosystem but also us. As you can see above, the number of people affected
by these issues is huge and is constantly growing and here’s why.
Global Warming: Global warming causes the rise of the
temperature of the Earth’s oceans which results in unnatural patterns of
precipitation, like flash floods. It can also result in stronger hurricanes and
severe heat strokes.
Deforestation:
Deforestation is very severe and affects the most number of people. Forests
produce vital oxygen and provide homes for a lot of people and wildlife.
Forests also play a critical role in climate change since they soak up carbon
dioxide, a greenhouse gas. This is why it is so important to save our forests.
Pollution:
Pollution to harms us in many ways. We are affected by air pollution because of
the toxic pollutants we inhale from the air. Water pollution can harm us
because we could be in taking polluted drinking water.
CHAPTER 3: How Can We Help?
Our environment needs
a lot of work, but most of us aren’t doing our part. If we want to save this
world and make it a better place for the generations to come, everyone will
have to help.
Firstly, the
current generation of adults need to fix what they have ruined. They need to
make sure that deforestation stops immediately. Another thing they must do is
conserve water and electricity. Also pollution has to come to an end. You can
do your part by saving water and keeping the environment clean.
Secondly, this
generation of kids need to rebuild the environment. We need to plant back the
forests and clean the environment. We can help in many ways, for instance
planting trees or joining environmental organizations to do things like
cleaning lakes.
Lastly, the future
generations have to maintain the environment. They will have to learn from our
mistakes and make sure not to repeat them. They will have to keep our
environment the way it first was and maintain the balance between human
progress and nature.
The environment is
in a serious state and if you don’t do anything about it, who will? It’s up to
us to save our world and make it a better place for the generations to come.
After all we only have one Earth.
