Tests like Asset should not be compulsory by Sunidhi

Argumentative Essay
When I first wrote Asset exams, I assumed it would help me with my performance in school. I started to write these exams since 3rd grade – but it was only when I reached middle school that I realized what horrible things these exams can do. Hence, I strongly believe that exams such as Asset should not be compulsory. They create high test anxiety, although you may think it’s not a big deal-children cannot face such a feeling. Schools also give consequences for performing poorly in these exams. Lastly, children mugging-up answers to score well in these exams do not develop long-term thinking.
Many students across the globe experience test anxiety while writing an exam. And such anxiety differs from person to person – so while some of use just feel our heart beat a little, others can even end up becoming sick and also start to feel nauseas. This test anxiety happens during standard that as well. But is it really worth for students suffering from test anxiety to feel double the pain? Besides the anxiety created by standard tests, do they really have to go through another round of it? Although some of us don't feel so tense, what about the others? Many may think test anxiety is just a not-so-good feeling, but it’s much more than that. Recent studies have found out that highly-anxious students perform a minimum of 12% worse than their low-anxiety peers, or those who don’t feel anxious at all. And you must be wondering why students stress so much about these exams. Well, some schools have exceptions for those students who perform poorly.
A student writing Asset exams says “We are given consequences by our school if we don’t get good grades. But I personally think this is a good way to teach the student to do better so the school doesn’t get a bad name.” I, as a student who has taken Asset exams, think to give consequences for performing poorly is OK. I did support this student’s statement. But then I realized that schools already have consequences for not scoring well in their standard tests. So why do they have negative consequences for not scoring well in exams like Asset? And, of course, not many schools understand student’s feelings of anxiety and tense. They would take this as a reason as some excuse for not studying. And these children are left to face consequences while the rest of us sit back at home and watch the Asset top rankers get medals, certificates etc. on T.V and say “Wow, Asset really brings out a child’s true potential”. But we don’t understand is standard tests can bring out your ‘true potential’. So why Asset? It’s not of much use, it’s just another dreaded and feared exam.
“Exams are necessary for improving a child’s performance.” A majority of people support this point. And as a matter of fact, I do think exams are necessary for students. But I think Asset are necessary for students. One of the reason being many students think of it, with so many exams in a term, “just another exam”. But still afraid to face the consequences, they do not want to take it Asset lightly. So, instead of taking the long, hard route of studying, they take a short route and begin to mug-up answers. The side effects of mugging-up answers can be very harmful in a way to children not only attending school, but everyone else who chooses to take a shortcut. This is because it does not allow them to develop long-term thinking. This means when you mug-up answers, neither are you understanding what you repeat continuously nor does it stay with you for long. So you tend to forget them at some point- without knowing what the answer said in the first place.
I’ve heard many students say with a sigh “Although I don’t like Asset, it is a necessary evil”. But I strongly feel it should be changed to ‘unnecessary evil’. Asset is just another one of those exams that are dreaded by many students. The aim of which Asset looks upon is a good and beneficial goal. But the path which they take is not right and hence end up doing unfair things to students. They intend to improve a child’s performance but instead makes it worse.

Why Sugary Soft Drinks Should be Banned By Aaryan Maini (6-C)

Why Sugary Soft Drinks Should be Banned
By Aaryan Maini (6-C)

I strongly believe soft drinks should bebanned. There are three reasons why soft drinks should be banned. First it is bad for your teeth. Secondly it causes a lot of obesity and finally it causes diabetes.  About 1.8 billion coke bottles are sold every day. This is only for Coca Cola. If you include other softdrinks it would be even more. You find soft drinks everywhere.I am going to convince you why soft drinks should be banned.

The first reason I feel soft drinks should be banned is because soft drinks are bad for your teeth. When we drink a lot of soft drinks it ruins the enamel.  Kids are most at risk because their enamel is thinner than adults.  It would be better if you drink water instead. The sugarinteracts with bacteria in your mouth to form acids which ruin your teeth. Each sip causes damage that lasts twenty minutes.  The two main effects are erosion and cavities. Studies done by the National Institute of Health and the Wisconsin Dental Association have proven this. People who like soft drinks may say if you drink soft drinks quickly or brush your teeth afterwards you canprevent cavities. This can help your teeth but drinking soft drinks will also cause obesity.

Soft drinks cause obesity. This is the second reason why they should not be allowed for children.  About 91 per cent of kids in the world consume soft drinks. Even though a lot of people like soft drinks many of them end up becoming obese. Soft drinks end up leading to heat diseases and other things. 82 per cent of the adults in the world like and drink soft drinks. There are many more drinks healthier than soft drinks which are both healthy and tasty. Some of the soft drinks that cause obesity are Coke, Fanta and Pepsi etc. A 20 ounce soda can has 240 calories. Many Americans get 10 percent of their calories from sugary drinks.  People who drink this “liquid candy” do not feel full so they do not eat less.  They consume more calories than they need and this can cause them to become fat.   Some people may think if you do not drink too much you will not get fat.  However, studies show that drinking just one soda every day increases your chances of being overweight by 27%.

Drinking soft drinks not only increase your chances of being overweight, they can also increase the risk of diabetes.  The Diabetes Association recommends that you should avoid sugary sodas because it raises the blood sugar. The high level of quick digesting sugar combined with a sedentary lifestyle is a big risk factor for diabetes. The extra energy is not needed and is stored in the body as fat. Obesity is one risk factor for diabetes. In addition thehigh sugar from the drinks requires the body to make more insulin. This over works the pancreas and can lead to diabetes.
However many people still find soft drinks tasty. They want to be allowed to drink soft drinks if they choose. If the government bans soft drinks they might as well ban all other unhealthy things like chocolates, candy etc.  This takes away their ability to make their own decisions.  However kids are very likely to make bad decisions when it comes to sweet things and their health.

Would you choose taste over health?  I think soft drinks should be banned, at least in all schools.  I hope you all agree with me.  Even though most of you like soft drinks I hope you can go with your health over taste and prevent more kids from ruining their health.

Pokémon Go Should not be banned Dhruv Pandey

Pokémon Go Should not be banned

Dhruv Pandey
Class VI-C

Pokémon Go is a location-based, free to play reality game, which I believe shouldn’t be banned, because it gets people out of their houses to get some fitness, they get to battle other players,  and compare their own experiences with others. One can discover new places at Pokestops like historic sites, water bodies etc. It has already been banned in Saudi Arabia, but I really hope that the game doesn’t die out. The main part of the game is that it is fun, people enjoy playing it, and that matters the most.
Pokémon Go makes the player go out of their homes, and catch Pokémons, instead of staying in their homes like a couch potato. Research has proven that the more Pokémon you catch, the more weight you lose. A hospital in Michigan has encouraged patients to plan Pokémon Go as a part of physical fitness and for health benefits. People are also walking their dogs more often because they are going outside to walk and jog in an attempt to catch Pokémons. People who take care of stray dogs and are trying to get them adopted are making progress because players don’t mind having a dog walk with them.
At level 5, you get to pick one of the three teams and play by their side. When you move around looking for Pokémon and are at the Pokestop, you might find another player and start comparing your experiences. That other player might be your friend or someone you don’t even know! So you get to meet new people and interact with them if you want to. When I saw people playing the game in Singapore, I felt like asking them things about the game, but I chose not to. At gyms, you get to battle the Pokémon others have left, and view the other Pokémon’s skills. The hospital at Michigan is also helping their patients interact and connect with other patients.
It is educational. As you are running out of the Pokéballs to catch Pokémon with, you have to go at Pokéstops. When the game came out, Niantic Inc. made sure that most of the Pokéstops were located at famous or historic places that people should know about. Some cabs also used to take you through a guide in the city to some of the Pokéstops that are famous tourist spots. At the start of the game while it is loading, it clearly states: ‘Stay aware of your surroundings’. Now if you listen to the game, you will probably also see the places where the Pokéstops are located and their historic significance. You get to see the place and catch the Pokémon. Double the fun!
People may think that the game is unsafe, and may cause accidents or kill people. Well, it is not the game’s fault. It is the player’s own fault. That is just like saying that it is the car’s fault that road accidents happen, or it is the knife’s fault that your hand got cut while cutting the vegetables. I will give the same reason if anyone says it’s too addictive. As I said earlier, it even warns you to stay aware. You certainly can’t play the blame game with this game.

All of this is what makes me argue that this game, namely Pokémon Go should not be banned. You go out, get fresh air and sunlight, play with friends and get to know about places you don’t even know. Don’t you think that is a great advancement in game technology and doesn’t deserve to be banned?

The Human Body By Khushi Agarwal

Human body

By KHUSHI B AGARWAL

Human body! Human body is you, your organs, your brain, your face etc. A whole package in one. But have you seen the human body from the inside? No right. I will describe some of the organs of the body that makes you, you! So to know more dive in an informative journey and know how your body is different from a machine.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Heart, the heart is an important part of the circulatory system. It supplies blood to the body. It’s divided into four sections, the upper two are called ‘Auricles ‘and the lower two are the ‘Ventricles’. The heart is as big as the owner`s fist. The cells have a big role in the circulatory system, they are the basic unit of life. They contain a nucleus, cytoplasm and membrane around the outside. There are two types of cells, prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. Next comes the arteries, veins and capillaries.

Arteries are red in color and are located below the veins. All arteries connect to the right side of the heart and carry oxygenated blood. The pulmonary artery is connected to the left side as it carries deoxygenated blood. Next are the veins, they are blue in color and carry deoxygenated blood. All veins join to the left side except the pulmonary vein. Veins are located above the arteries as they aren`t delicate. Last but the least capillaries, they join the arteries and the veins and have a web like structure.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
The respiratory system is a biological system consisting of organs and structures used for the process of respiration in an organism. The respiratory system includes many organs like the nose, mouth, windpipe etc. First comes the nose, it contains small hairs called Cilla, they prevent the dust going inside. Next is the nasal cavity, this is a continuation of the two nostrils. It contains WBC (white blood cells) to fight against germs.

Wind pipe, its takes the air to the bronchi and bronchioles, when the air reaches to bronchi, it gets sent to the bronchioles and then gets sent to the lungs. The lungs consist about thousand alveoies.

SIMILARITIES
If one part stops, the whole system will not work.

By now you would have known about the human body and its functions and would be quiet informative and interesting to share this information with your friends.

About Syria
Where is Syria located?
Who are the ISIS?
How did it all start ?

Introduction
Wondering about  the  everlasting  Syrian  war ? Who are the ISIS? The ISIS are a group of terrorists who terrorized Syria, since 2011.
Syria, is located in the continent of Asia, it covers 183,630 sq kilometers of land. It is the 89th largest country in the world.
The Syrian president Basher-Al-Assad did not appreciate people who disagreed with him, he started torturing and killing people who disagreed with him. The three forces were at work against Arab Nationalism. British interest in keeping eastern Mesopotamia, under  its  control in order to counter Russians influence and protect British oil interests. The Jewish interest in Palestine, and France’s determination to remain in a power in the East.
I  Hope You Enjoy this article!
                                      About Syria
Present – Day Syria is only a small portion of the ancient geographical. Syrian  land –mass, a region situated at the eastern end of the meridian sea. Greater Syria as historians and political scientists refer to this area, is a region connecting three continents, simultaneously cursed and blessed as a crossroads for commerce and a battleground for the political destinies of dynasties and empires. Exploited politically, greater Syria also benefited immeasurably from the cultural diversity of the people who came to claim parts or a whole of it and who remained to contribute to the remarkable, spirited and intelligent flowering that characterized Greater Syria’s cultures in the medieval   periods. Through history, Greater Syria has been the focal point of a continuous dialectic, both intellectual and bellicose, between the middle  east and the west.
Syria endured decades of strife and turmoil as competing faction, fought over control of the countries, government following Independence in 1946.
The period of Independence, the period between the outbreak of World War 1 in 1914 and the granting of France’s mandate over. Syria by the League of Nations 1922 was marked by a complicated sequence of events during which Syrians achieved a brief period of independence (1909 – 1920). However, three forces were at work against Arab Nationalism: Britain’s interesting in keeping eastern Mesopotamia under its control in order to countries Russian influence and to protect British oil interest. The Jewish interest in Palestine, and France’s determination to remain a power in the east. Ultimately, Syria and Lebanon was placed under French influence and transportation and Iraq, under British Mandate. The termination of Syria’s brief experience with Independence left a lasting bitterness against the west and a deep-seated determination to reunite the Arabs in one state. This quest was the primary basis for a modern Arab Nationalism.

Where is Syria located?

Syria is located in the Asia Continent. Syrian Arab Republic covers 183,630 sq kilometers of land making it the 89th largest nation in the world with a total area of 185,180 sq kilometers.
Syria became an independent state in 1946 after gaining its sovereignty from Turkey. The population of Syria is 22,530,746 in (2012) and the nation has a density of 123 people per sq kilometers.
Who are the ISIS?
The ISIS is the Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. ISIL is Islamic state in Iraq and the Zeriant. They are the Jihadist militant group which emerged from radical Sunni jihadist in Iraq who fought under the banner “AL-Qaeda” in Iraq.
They were founded in 2004 and grew from “al-Qaeda” linked group, but it is thought the two groups have since distanced themselves from each other.
In april 2010, present ISIS leader Abu-Baker al-Baghdadi became the new head of the group. He is now one of the world’s most notorious men.
The US state department has a $10M bounty on his head.
Only the leader of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has a larger reward offers for his capture or death $ 25M.

How did this all start?
In 2011, Syria caught Arab spring bug happening across mid-east, Anti-government protest broke out. Syrian president Basher al-Assad did not appreciate these and responded with a massive crackdown, torturing and killing those who disagreed with him. This prompted protesters to form groups and eventually arm themselves against him. Soon, this was a full blown civil war, with at least a thousand rebel groups with different agendas,
For a while there were rumors of both sides using chemical weapons. Then, in August 2013, graphic images surfaced that appeared to show a massive chemical weapon attack on the civilians in Syria. The US and friends freaked out and blamed Assad, Assad blamed the rebels. For a second it looked like the US war on the brink of military intervention in Syria. Until the UN and Assad cut a deal, and he turned over his chemical weapons to be destroyed. Talk of intervention called off, at least for a little while.
The Syrian civil war is a conflict between the its long-serving government and those seeking to boot it out of office, The Assad family has held power in Syria since  1971. First, it was Hafez-al-Assad, then Basher-al-Assad.
Unlike many regime leaders in the middle  east. They are Alawities  a relatively obscure branch of Islam, which is not particularly hard line. Islamists, as happened in other countries which participated in the Arab Spring Uprisings.
But people are still angry at their government. As Rodger Shanahan points out what, they are angry about is the failure of long promised economic and political reforms.

RICK RIORDAN- An American novelist, teacher and inspirational parent by Devashree

Have nothing to read? Well, I was in that situation too;
till I heard about the Percy Jackson series and the books’ wonderful author, Rick Riordan. He is an American novelist who has written many award winning books such as Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus etc. He writes for adults too. So read on if you want to know about his life, family, inspirations and ideas, and of course books.
Childhood and early life
Camp capers
Let’s start at the beginning, before Rick Riordan was famous let’s start at his childhood and other careers. Rick Riordan was born on 5th June 1964 in san Antonio, Texas. He was given the name Richard Russell {rick} Riordan Jr. after his father. He was an only child. Richard attended Alamo heights where he was editor of his high school newspaper. Once he got into a lot of trouble for publishing an underground newspaper that made fun of his school especially the football team. He loved reading lord of the rings, Norse and Greek mythology. Another one of his hobbies was to swim. After school he got into the university of Texas where he got a double major in history and English. Some of his jobs before he started full time writing were a music director at camp capers (that’s where he got the idea of camp half-blood in his books) and he was also a teacher at presidio high school and new Braunfels.
Books
Rick Riordan’s books are very famous but he says “I didn't anticipate such an exponential growth.” If anybody finds writing hard, an advice to you from him is that “writing is like a sport. It’s like athletics. If you don’t practice, you don’t get any better.” He has written 42 books and 4 complete series till now. A list of his books are given below: -

  • Percy Jackson- it is the start of a whole new world about gods and demigods.
  • Kane chronicles- these books are about magicians and Egyptian gods.
  • Tres Navarre- adult fiction, detective novels
  • Heroes of Olympus- these books are about romans meeting Greeks. Are they going to unite and defeat the giants or are they going to start world war three among themselves?
  • The 39 clues [vespers rising and maze of bones] this novel series is not only written by Rick Riordan but a number of different authors. It is about two children who discover that their family is the most influential family in history.
  • Magnus Chase and the sword of summer - is all about Norse gods and mythology.
  •  The Trials of Apollo- can you imagine a god turned into a mortal? What is he going to do? Read this book to find out.
  • Percy Jackson and the Greek gods- mythological stories about Greek gods
  • Percy Jackson and the Greek heroes- mythological stories about Greek heroes
  • A number of other short stories.
His favourite characters from his own series are Tyson and Grover because they are funny and he likes writing about them. His favourite god is Poseidon god of water and sea life and his favourite goddess is Athena goddess of wisdom and warfare.
                Family
Patrick Riordan
Rick Riordan Sr.

Haley Riordan
Lyn Belisle
I’m going to talk about Rick’s family in this section. Let’s start with his parents; their names were Rick Riordan Sr. and Lyn Belisle. Both of them were teachers. Rick Riordan’s wife is Becky Riordan whom he married at the age of 24 and her birthdate too is on 5th June. They have two sons Haley who is a student novelist and Patrick Riordan.

Becky Riordan

Inspirations
This section is all about where Rick Riordan got his ideas of Percy Jackson from. His son Haley Riordan got dyslexia that means he couldn’t read or write properly. When Haley was in second grade he had a very bad time in school, so Rick Riordan used to tell him a lot about Greek mythology and in order to keep Haley happy he made new stories of a boy with dyslexia ADHD who discovered he was a son of the god, Poseidon that means he was a demigod [half god half human] and like I mentioned before he got the idea of camp half-blood, the place where demigods can find safety; from Camp Capers where he was music director.

                                                My thoughts
I think Rick Riordan is a terrific author. His books have humour, cliff-hangers and mystery, just the kind of traits I like in a book. Some other fans have the same opinion although they like J.K Rowling, the author of harry potter better. I cannot compare between these two authors as their books are equally good.

Rick Riordan Jr. is possibly a great inspiration to many parents as well as children. He went great lengths to help his son enjoy life at home as much as he can to cover up for the bad school days and because of this stressing moment he became a world famous author. I enjoyed writing about this topic and I hope you liked reading about his childhood, careers, family, books and inspirations too and so I come to the end of my feature article.
