Some of which you would not recognize, others that might be surprising.

5: Kola Superdeep Borehole

Located within the Arctic Circle of Russia is the deepest hole ever drilled into the Earth.

Soviet scientists began drilling the hole in 1970, eventually reaching a depth of 12,262 meters in 1989. The Soviets wanted to bore through the Earth`s crust and into the mantle, though no one knew what would happen. Fears of unleashing seismic disaster upon the world or even demons from hell proved to be unfounded. The project was abandoned due to temperatures of 177°C. Rock was poured back into the borehole.

4: Trinity Test

Conducted as part of the Manhattan project by the U.S army, the Trinity Test was the first ever detonation of a Nuclear Device. The bomb`s initial development was delayed by fears of scientist Edward Teller as he thought the explosion would set the Earth`s Nitrogen Layer on fire and would destroy the atmosphere. Further calculation would show that the odds of such a reaction were very small and progress continued.

The resulting explosion produced the power a 21 kilotons of TNT.

3: The large Hadron Collider

When it went live, some thought the LHC would end the world. The Particle Accelerator was designed to send proton beams around a 17 mile loop before crashing them together at the speed of light to simulate the microscopic black holes that were formed during the Big Bang.

Some thought these black holes would consume the Earth. This idea was dismissed because calculations showed that any black holes formed would evaporate due to a phenomenon known as Hawking Radiation.

 

2: Starfish Prime

 

The Earth`s magnetosphere is an important layer that protects us from the solar winds. What would happen if a nuclear bomb was detonated there? The U.S decided to find out.

Seeking ways to disrupt Soviet Missile systems, the U.S detonated a thermonuclear warhead 250 miles above the Pacific Ocean. The 1.4 Megaton explosion was seen 900 miles away and damaged the phone lines in Hawaii.

This created a belt of artificial Radiation the lasted for 5 years and damaged all satellites in low Earth orbit.

1: S.E.T.I

The “search for extra-terrestrial intelligence” is the collective name for a number of activities searching for E.T.

Nikola Tesla theorized that radio could be used to contact Alien Life. In 1899 he observed signals that he thought were coming from Mars.

The U.S declared a “National Radio Day” between August 21 and 23 to allow scientists to listen for transmissions from Mars.

Current studies involve ground and space telescopes, large radio arrays and distributed copmuting.

If we alert Aliens, it might be the end of us all because we don`t know if they are friendly.
